About

Maria Arendt included in the list of the Best Russian contemporary artists (Art Index). An artist was born in Moscow, works in Moscow. Graduated from Russian Art College. Her works are in museum and private collections of different countries. She is interested in painting, graphic art, embroidery, objects and she does book illustrations. Genetically the word «embroidery» means cosiness, home handicraft, we imagine young women with embroidery hoops creating familiar patterns typical for the century. Maria Arendt embroiders in a different cultural way. And we can’t say that she does it in addition to other more conventional arts – painting, graphic art, objects (like in a joke – «and she does some embroidery») – on the contrary – this is embroidery which represents her personal «brand» now most of all. «Black embroidery» – is nearly a matrix of the brand: here a poetry is demonstrated in the pure form, which is able to add proactive components when it is needed, appropriate to this or that exhibition idea. The things are light, flying (fabrics is to be able to fly); minimalist contour of things and the situation invade the space delicately, with complete awareness of own composite sophistication – as a result- the emptiness of the background obtains a distinct voice. Traditional «embroidery» meanings leave the text, being substituted by meanings of contemporary art – the work with different contexts and language territories: because «paintings» appeal to the idea of fast drawing, spontaneous gesture – and the fact that the gesture is created by slow and careful work with stitches , not just knock down the settings of the sight, but, in some ways, reformats this sight indirectly (G. Elshevskaya).
